The Pro Kabaddi League has earned massive popularity, especially in India and it has already become one of the most popular sports leagues. This is a traditional sport of South Asia and with a new format and a few changes to the rules, this sport has got the spotlight of sponsors and audience.
The league follows a format similar to other sports leagues. 12 teams representing various parts of India, compete against each other to win the championship. Qualification for Playoffs:
After the league stage, the top teams on the points table qualify for the playoffs. In other leagues, there are four teams but when it comes to the PKL, the top six teams advance to the playoffs.
Playoff Matches:
The playoffs consist of eliminator matches, semifinals, and the final. The teams placed 3rd and 6th face each other in Eliminator 1. The teams that are placed 4th and 5th face each other in Eliminator 2. The winners of these matches move on to the semifinals, where they face the top two teams. The semifinal winners then compete in the final to see who is the champion of the Pro Kabaddi League. This format was adopted after the inclusion of 4 teams in 2017.
Knockout Format:
The playoff stage follows a knockout format. It means a team must win their match to move forward. If they lose, they are out of the competition.
Points Scoring System
Points in the PKL are awarded based on both individual match performances and overall team results:
Match Points:
Winning a Match: If a team wins a match, it will earn 5 points.
Losing a Match: However, If the losing team loses by 7 or fewer points, they get 1 point. If they lose by more than 7 points, they get 0 points.
Tied Match: In a situation, where the match is tied, both teams earn 3 points each.
Bonus Points:
Super Tackle: A team earns 2 points for a super tackle. A super tackle is when three or fewer defenders successfully tackle a raider.
Do-or-Die Raid: This is a must-score raid. If a raider fails to score in two consecutive raids, the third raid becomes do-or-die. If he scores in this raid, his team will get extra points.
Season Rankings:
Teams are ranked based on their accumulated points during the league stage. The higher the points, the better the rank.
Team Budgets
Each PKL team has a specific budget to manage during the season. This budget covers player salaries, team management, and other expenses:
Player Auctions:
Before the season starts, an auction is held where teams bid for players. Each team has a set amount of money which is 5 crore INR that they can spend on players buying. This fixed budget makes sure that there is a level playing field where teams can’t buy all the top players.
Salary Cap:
The PKL sets a salary cap, which limits how much a team can spend on players’ salaries. In this way, The richer teams cannot dominate the auction by spending excessively.
Player Retention:
According to Pro Kabaddi Rules and Regulations, Teams can retain a certain number of players from their previous squad. However, this also impacts their budget, as retained players’ salaries are deducted from the total budget.
General Rules Regarding Players and Teams
Let us discuss the general rules of Pro Kabaddi that deal with how teams are built and players in and out during the matches.
Team Composition:
A team consists of 12 players, with 7 on the mat (playing) and 5 on the bench. A team combination demands that each team should have a certain number of raiders, defenders, and all-rounders to perform well.
Player Substitutions:
Teams are allowed to make substitutions during a match, but only 5 players can be substituted.
Player Conduct:
Players must follow the Pro Kabaddi rules and regulations for matches to go on smoothly. Misbehavior, such as arguing with referees or unsportsmanlike conduct, can lead to penalties or suspension. Players can also be tested for drugs and illegal substance intake.
Injury Management:
If a player is injured, teams can bring in a substitute. However, the injured player cannot return to the match if he has been substituted.
Captaincy:
Each team has a captain who is responsible for making decisions during the match, such as when to review a referee.
Overall Pro Kabaddi Rules and Regulations
Here are few other general rules that make sure that teams and players must follow them and a healthy sport environment can be maintained.
Match Duration:
Each match is divided into two halves of 20 minutes each. There is a 5-minute break between these two halves. The team with the most points at the end of the match wins.
Timeouts:
Each team is allowed to take two timeouts per match. These timeouts are usually of 90 seconds each and during this time, players can make new strategies or just take a break.
Review System:
The teams that are playing can also challenge a referee’s decision using the review system. If the challenge is successful, the team retains its review. If not, they lose the review. The participating teams can get one review per half.
Tiebreakers:
If a playoff match ends in a tie then a tiebreaker is used to decide the winner. The tiebreaker is actually a "Golden Raid," where each team gets one raid, and whichever team scores more points wins in this raid, will be the winner of that match.
Referees and Officials:
In PKL, all the matches are officiated by referees who are allowed to enforce the rules, make decisions on points, and handle any mismanagement during the game. The decisions of the referees are final but a team can challenge them by taking the reviews.
Disciplinary Actions:
The PKL has a disciplinary committee that basically reviews any incidents of misconduct or rule violations. According to the depth of the issue, they can apply the relevant fines and penalties.
