Poker Hand Analysis 1: J/J, Q/Q, K/K

This may have given you a shock already. You’re thinking: “What the heck? These are some of the most powerful starting hands that we can get, and they are overestimated?” Indeed these three hands are only a class less than holding the Aces so it should be an easy call. Though what we are talking about here is whether an edge of the hand equals an edge of the board.

I understand that you all think these three hands are an easy call pre-flop at least, though the key point is that we need to observe the situation post-flop. Once the board is dealt with, these three hands may not be as powerful as they were pre-flop. Facing an aggressive player, an Ace on the flop will immediately put you in a weak spot since you now lose to all hands that contain an Ace and you have to bluff your way out pretending you have an Ace with a better kicker. Though normally it doesn’t end well. So my advice is that, when you see an Ace on the flop while you are holding one of these three hands, just give up and fold.

Poker Hand Analysis 2: A/2~A/9

Since we’ve already mentioned that J/J, Q/Q, and K/K might lose to the hand holding an Ace when the board comes to A, X, X, then why do we still think A/2~A/9 is overrated? Indeed A/X does have an edge when the flop comes an Ace, but it would be at a disadvantage when the flop comes a straight draw, a flush draw, or even the fewer points cards only. So to be fair, these two types of hands don’t possess an absolute edge over the other. More specifically, there’s no hand in Hold’em that has an absolute edge over the other. However, the odds for A/2~A/9 getting out-flopped are high, if the flop comes 5,6,7 or 2,2,5, there’s no help to this kind of hand from the board. So if there’s no Ace on the flop, we suggest you just give up and fold.

Poker Hand Analysis 3: Pair of 2~ Pair of 7

The next is the pair combinations. You all know that none of the pairs that are less than Aces beat it unless they’ve flopped a set. So under these kinds of circumstances, what we can do is use our betting skills and image to make bluffs from time to time to manipulate the thoughts of our opponents. So we can reduce the impacts of luck in the game. Though why do we choose small pairs? Since face card pairs are already in the strong league and 8/8,9/9,10/10 are decent in the game, we would say that pairs less than 8s are the ones we should probably spend fewer chips on gambling with.

There are thirteen points in a full deck, if we look for the median then that would be 8, 9~Aces are the better ones, and the 2~7s are the lesser ones. Hence under probability theory, we should play fewer pairs of 2 to 7 since there’s 70% of them get out-flopped.

Poker Hand Analysis 4: A/A

Some of you may find it ridiculous when you saw the last one we put on that’s overrated. It’s already rare that we may have Aces since it’s the strongest preflop hand, why would I need to consider it as overrated? Indeed in pre-flop, it’s the strongest one may get, though as we have mentioned before, there’s no absolute winning hand in Hold’em. After the flop, there are all sorts of possibilities that might beat the Aces. So if the situation is not in our favor please do not hesitate to fold the hand and muck it.

On the table, there are all sorts of players playing with different styles. Some might be good at acting or simply playing as a rebellion and pick some hands to go to the flop that normally others wouldn’t. Therefore holding Aces against them is a cheerful thing since they are more likely to bet all their money when it’s not in their favor. Though we have to stay calm and analyze the situation when there’s a new come deal on the board. If you feel like you were beaten, just smile and fold it. It’s ok to wait for a better opportunity.
